Most of us are, but with a little bit of care and attention these bad habits can be eliminated, or at least minimised. One of the most common bad habits is simply not spending enough time on oral care at home through failing to brush thoroughly, and failing to floss every day. Unfortunately this is one bad habit that can lead to tooth loss and consequently needing dental implant in Kent. The reason for this is that the plaque bacteria that build up in the mouth over the course of a few hours simply cannot be removed any other way, and failing to remove them will lead to gum disease. Brushing and flossing is quick, and if done properly is very effective. If you are ever unsure then ask Dr Rik Trivedi or another Kent dentist for help and advice.

Dental Implant KentGum disease is incredibly common, and is something that will affect most people, to some degree or other, during their lifetime. It is where the gums become infected, and it is a very destructive disease as it can lead to the loss of gum tissue and the loss of bone around the teeth.

Another bad habit is using teeth as tools. Your teeth are not meant to open packets, or even worse to open bottles, and you run the risk of chipping or fracturing them. Even biting down on very hard foods such as ice cubes and nuts can sometimes be enough to break a tooth.

Snacking in between meals is another thing that can harm your teeth, as every time you eat something your mouth becomes more acidic, and this acidity can soften the tooth enamel, increasing the risk of tooth decay as the acid will gradually wear it away. It is far better to try to stick to regular meals, or to only have tooth friendly snacks such as cheese or crunchy vegetables.

Even small changes to your lifestyle can make a difference to your dental health. Of course you also need to back up these changes with regular visits to Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre, and preventative dental care will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy so you are less likely to need dental implants in Kent.

Next time you brush your teeth, just pause for a moment and think about how you do it. Notice the way you hold your brush, and your routine for brushing all the surfaces of your teeth. Are you doing the best job you can, and do your teeth feel really clean after you have finished? Hopefully the answer is yes, but the truth is that you may be missing out some areas of your teeth, and perhaps if you rum your tongue over the tooth surfaces, you might even be able to feel these areas are slightly sticky still. Most of us have a set habit when it comes to tooth brushing, and it is an automatic action that is often completed when we feel tired or are in a hurry.

Dental Implant KentAll You Need is Two Minutes, Twice a Day

That is all it takes to clean all the surfaces of your teeth with your tooth brush, although you will still need to floss once a day. It is very little time to take out of even the busiest day, and could mean you end up saving time and money in the future as you will be far less likely to need dental implants in Kent.

If you use an electric toothbrush, then it is likely to already have a built in timer, but if not then timers can be bought very cheaply, and one of the major toothbrush manufacturers recently released an app designed to make brushing easier. It is due to be released in the UK in just a few months’ time.

In the meantime, think of your mouth being split up into four different quadrants or quarters, and concentrate on cleaning one quarter every thirty seconds. Angle your brush so it is able to reach right down to the gum line, and to just below the point where your gums meet your teeth, as these areas often have the most bacteria. Use small circular movements to clean your teeth, and don’t press too hard as you could wear away your gums or even your tooth enamel. Don’t forget to floss!

Would you like more help on how to care for your teeth? Ask Dr Rik Trivedi, or any of our dental team at your next appointment, and you can book by giving us a call on 01474 537191. Dr Rik Trivedi and all the dentists at Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre will always do their best to make your teeth last as long as possible, and this is one of the reasons why we always advocate preventative dental care. However sometimes a tooth can become damaged or broken down and it may require more extensive restorative treatment.

Dental Implant KentEven though fillings can be used to restore quite large areas of decay, they’re not always the best course of treatment as the sometimes the loss of tooth structure can weaken the tooth substantially. In this case the tooth can be restored using something that will help to strengthen the remaining tooth structure, preventing it from breaking down even further. This will hopefully prevent it from being lost, so you don’t need to think about replacing it with a dental implant in Kent.

CEREC restorations can be used for inlays and onlays. These replace large areas of decay than conventional fillings and are milled from a single block of porcelain so they are really pretty strong and long-lasting. Even better, there’s no need to wait for weeks on end while our dental laboratory constructs these custom-made restorations.

Did you know we have a CEREC Machine?

We have a CEREC milling machine right here at Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre and we can make your restoration while you wait. Treatment is completed in one simple visit, as your tooth will be prepared and scanned using a special camera. Our dentists in Kent will design your inlay, onlay or crown, and will send the information to the milling machine. A typical CEREC restoration takes just twenty minutes to be milled, during which time you can sit back and relax with our DVD system.

CEREC porcelain blocks come in a wide variety of shades and translucencies so your restoration will be virtually invisible. This restorative treatment is extremely healthy for your teeth as a minimal amount of tooth structure needs to be removed, helping to maintain the strength of your tooth.

We often use CEREC for dental restorations that are being used to repair teeth, but the system can also be used to create wonderful veneers. It is also ideal if you have a dental emergency such as a chipped or broken tooth right before an important event.

Do you think you have filings that need replacing, or perhaps you have older style silver fillings that you‘d like to get rid of? If so contact us on 01474 537191 to book an appointment. You can read more about CEREC, and can see photos of restorations on our website at www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk.

Have you recently had a nagging toothache? Perhaps you’ve ignored it or it’s simply gone away. It’s important to see your dentist in Kent if your toothache lasts longer than a couple of days, or if it’s especially severe. Make an appointment to see Dr Rik Trivedi even if the toothache seems to disappear as it will have been caused by some dental problem.

Dental Implant KentCommon symptoms of the toothache include having a nagging or throbbing pain, or sometimes the tooth may only feel uncomfortable when pressure is applied. If the tooth is infected you might notice you have an unpleasant taste in your mouth, and the gum tissue around the tooth may be swollen. Other symptoms can include having a headache or even developing a fever.

Toothache can be caused due to damage to the tooth that has allowed bacteria to penetrate, and this may be from trauma or through decay. Bacteria can also enter the tooth if it has fractured, or if it has an old or leaky filling. Sometimes teeth can become infected due to certain habits such as bruxism or tooth grinding, as this damages the tooth through wearing away the protective layer of enamel.

Diagnosing and Treating Toothache

Your dentist will carry out a physical examination of the tooth. The treatment can depend on the cause of the infection and the extent of damage to the tooth. It might be that all you need is a filling, although sometimes the bacteria will have penetrated the pulp and root canal of the tooth so it’s quite possible you may need root canal treatment to remove the infection. If the pain occurred quite some time ago and seemed to subside then it’s quite possible that the nerves within the tooth have died due to infection. Unfortunately the bacteria can still continue to spread and may affect the bone surrounding the tooth. In these situations the tooth may need extracting, and you might end up requiring dental implant in Kent.

Early Diagnosis Can Save Your Tooth

This is why it’s so important to seek treatment sooner rather than later, and is one of the reasons why we recommend six monthly check-ups with Dr Trivedi or another of our Kent dentists. If you feel nervous about visiting the dentist then do ask us for help as there are lots of things we can do to help you feel more comfortable about receiving treatment.

If you’re overdue for a check-up, call us today to book an appointment on 01474 537191. Nervous patients will find lots of information about sedation dentistry on our website at www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk and Dr Trivedi also has an e-mail course on overcoming dental fears.

Wisdom teeth are well known for causing problems, as these third molars don’t erupt until the late teens when all the other teeth have long since come through. This means there is often too little room left for the wisdom teeth to erupt correctly, and they can frequently become impacted. This means they will try to come up underneath other teeth or to erupt sideways through the gum. Other problems can arise if the wisdom teeth only partially erupt, as the resulting flap of gum tissue around the tooth is the perfect trap for bacteria. This can lead to decay and infection, especially as wisdom teeth are often quite tricky to clean.

Dental Implant KentIf you don’t yet have your wisdom teeth Dr Rik Trivedi or another Kent dentist will have been keeping a close eye on their development through the use of dental x-rays. If they think you may develop problems, then they could recommend you have them removed before these can occur. Wisdom tooth removal is often easier in younger people as the bone hasn’t had sufficient time to harden, and the tooth roots won’t be fully developed. However you may wish to wait and see, and of course you can always contact the Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre if you think these teeth may be causing problems.

What to Expect during Extraction

Tooth extraction is very straightforward and is normally carried out under a local anaesthetic, although Dr Trivedi can offer extra sedation if you feel nervous about this procedure. Recovery afterwards can depend on whether or not removal was straightforward, but generally you can expect to feel a little bit of discomfort for at least the first 24 hours. It’s also common to experience some bleeding before a blood clot forms in the empty socket. You might also notice a little bit of facial swelling and may wish to apply an ice pack during the first few hours. If your tooth was infected then Dr Trivedi it may have prescribed antibiotics and it’s important to take these until the prescription is completed.

Avoid touching the extraction site for at least 24 hours after surgery, and it’s also best to avoid spitting or sucking as this could dislodge the blood clot in the socket. It’s extremely important that this blood clot remains undisturbed as it helps the healing process and will keep the empty socket free from infection. Luckily wisdom teeth do not need replacing, so there’s no need to worry that you’ll need dental implants in Kent.

If you’re concerned your wisdom teeth are causing problems then why not book an appointment for a check-up? You can call us on 01474 537191 or alternatively you can fill in our enquiry form online at www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk  to request a call back.

If you are missing teeth then Dr Rik Trivedi, or any dentist in Kent will always recommend replacing them, but the choice of how to do so is largely down to you. The simplest way, and the most cost effective method, is to have a denture that can replace a few teeth, or all your teeth if necessary. Alternatively you may want to opt for a bridge that is either cemented to existing teeth, or which is held in place by dental implants. You can also use dental implants to hold single crowns or even a denture. Many dentists in Kent think of dental implants as being the gold standard for replacing missing teeth, but does this necessarily mean they are the right choice for you?

Things to Consider About Dental Implants in Kent

Dental Implant KentDental implants are the most permanent way of replacing missing teeth, but some people may be concerned about the surgical procedure involved in inserting the posts into the jawbone. The time taken to insert a single implant is pretty short, ranging from half an hour to an hour, and you will be kept comfortably anaesthetised during this time. If you have dental phobias or are particularly scared about dental treatment, then Dr Trivedi may well be able to help you through offering extra sedation.

Dental implants will not affect any existing teeth, unlike bridges that are supported by existing teeth, and partial dentures that may need metal clasps that fit around natural teeth. They are also good for helping to preserve the bone in your jaw, as the jawbone surrounding your implants will receive stimulation from the implant posts which helps to promote the growth of new bone cells.

While they are great, and many people will find them well worth the effort, it would be pointless to think dental implant in Kent will be the best choice for everyone. If you have any medical conditions that affect your immune system (for example diabetes) then you might find an alternative method of tooth replacement a better bet. If you smoke and really don’t want to give up, even for a while, then your risk of implant failure will increase significantly.

The best way to find out if you would benefit from dental implants or if an alternative solution might be better is to ask Dr Trivedi. You can ask questions through filling out our enquiry form at www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk or you could just give us a call on 01474 537191, to book your consultation.

Well it will certainly help, as flossing is one of the best ways to help keep your gums healthy and free from disease. Having the correct flossing technique, and taking the time to do it every day, will help remove much of the plaque and food particles that can build up on your teeth and gums during the day. The reason why flossing is so important is that it is able to reach areas where your toothbrush simply can’t get to. Even if you have a brush with a relatively small head, it will still not be able to get in between each tooth. These contact areas between the teeth are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay, and to gum disease.

Dental Implant KentWhenever you floss, you need to make sure the floss reaches right down to and just below the gum line. This is the point where the tooth meets the gum, and is one of the areas where plaque can build up if not regularly removed. It is important to floss every day as plaque can soon harden into tartar, a hard yellowish substance that will have to be scraped away during your check-up and professional cleaning at Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre. Tartar also does a great job of irritating and infecting the gums, causing inflammation, bleeding and tenderness that are the early signs of gum disease.

What Happens if You Don’t Floss?

If you fail to floss, or tend to only floss when you can feel you have something stuck in between your teeth, then you are greatly increasing your chances of developing gum disease, and your chances of needing dental implant in Kent.

The build-up of tartar and plaque on your teeth will create more and more inflammation in the gums as your body tries to fight back against the infection, and it is this inflammation that will cause the most damage to your gums, and to the bone and ligaments surrounding your teeth. There are various treatments for chronic gum disease, a condition called periodontal disease, but these can be expensive and will need to be carried out as part of an on-going treatment plan as chronic disease cannot be cured. Eventually these tissues will be destroyed, and your teeth will become loose,, and by this stage there will be very little that Dr Rik Trivedi, or any of our dentists will be able to do to save them.

Why let things get to this stage when we can help you. If you find it difficult to floss then ask us for help and advice. We take preventative dental care very seriously and we always have the time to offer practical advice. Smile makeovers can include several different treatments, depending on exactly what needs to be done to help give you the smile of your dreams. One such treatment that can be very useful is dental implantology. Dr Rik Trivedi is the principal dentist at Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre, and he has undertaken extensive additional training in this field, and is able to create functional and beautiful smiles.

Dental Implant KentDental implant in Kent can be used to replace just one missing tooth, or they can even be used to replace complete arches of teeth. If you currently have a full denture, and would prefer not to, then it may be possible to use multiple dental implants to hold a fixed bridge in position. If you are looking for something a bit more economical, then you might want to consider dental implants to hold your denture firmly in place.

Other Treatments Used in Smile Makeovers

While dental implants can form part of a smile makeover, they aren’t always necessary, and there are many treatments that are more commonly used. Most smile makeovers will include teeth whitening, as teeth do discolour and darken with age, and having them whitened is a quick way to give your looks a boost. This can be used as a standalone treatment, or in conjunction with other dental treatments such as veneers, crowns, white fillings, and bridges.

It is quite an art to create a great looking smile that functions properly, and which will make the most of your features, so it is something that has to be planned very carefully. Dr Trivedi will want to take impressions of your teeth which will be used to create plaster models, as well as x-rays. You’ll find he will take the time to discuss your smile requirements with you so the first diagnostic wax-up model of your teeth can be made.

This is where your plaster tooth model is adapted with tooth coloured wax to show how various treatments will work. This model can be adapted as often as necessary until you are happy with the results. Once your teeth have been prepared, then this model is used as a template to make any temporary teeth, so you get to ‘test drive’ your new smile before it is completed. If you are unhappy with anything then it can be corrected before your permanent teeth are made, although it is worth remembering that your permanent teeth will always look better than the temporaries!

If you are thinking about having a smile makeover, or even a mini makeover, then why not book a consultation to find out more? Call us on 01474 537191, or if you’d prefer you can fill in our enquiry form online at www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk.

A recent report from Public Health England has shown that more than a quarter of five year olds have tooth decay, and even though this might sound shocking, it is actually a decline compared to previous figures. The survey used data collected from 133,000 dental check-ups, and found that 27% of five year olds had one or more decayed teeth, compared to 30% back in 2008.

Kent Dental ImplantThis shows there is still room for improvement, especially as some 3% of children with tooth decay had to have teeth extracted, a process that is carried out under general anaesthetic in hospital. Undergoing such an experience while still very young is unlikely to make these children fans of visiting the dentist, and regular dental care is vitally important in helping adult teeth to last a lifetime.

Dr Rik Trivedi and his dental team are very keen on preventative dental care, and can really help parents who may be struggling with getting their children into a regular routine of teeth cleaning. We can help to lessen the chance of dental cavities in your children’s teeth through the application of dental sealants that are used to cover up the chewing surfaces of their teeth, as well as topical applications of fluoride to help harden their teeth. Your dentist in Kent can also help if you find it difficult to seek dental care.

Gentle Dental Care for all the Family

If you suffer from dental phobias and fears, then there is the chance that you could inadvertently pass this on to your own children, as they are likely to pick up on your reluctance to have dental treatment and could grow up viewing dental care as something to be feared. Dr Trivedi is also very good at dealing with nervous patients, and can offer additional sedation where necessary; all you have to do is ask us for help. Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre often see people who have previously felt too nervous to visit the dentist for years, or even decades. It is possible to overcome these fears, and to go on to get the smile you’d really like, and sedation dentistry could even help you to have dental implants in Kent.

If you have young children, and would like to book a check-up for them then just give us a call on 01474 537191. If you struggle with dental phobias then take a look at our website on www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk as you will find lots of information on sedation dentistry, and you can read lots of testimonials from patients who used to be afraid of visiting the dentist.

Gum disease is already well known for being the major cause of tooth loss amongst adults in the world, but did you know it’s also being connected to rheumatoid arthritis. The connection between gum disease and other inflammatory conditions is well-established, but researchers have found that the bacteria responsible for gum disease worsened collagen induced arthritis in mice, a condition that is similar to rheumatoid arthritis in humans, increasing the progression of the disease and its severity. This is due to the fact that the bacterium prompts the production of an enzyme which in turn exacerbates collagen induced arthritis.

Dental Implants KentSo what exactly is the connection between gum disease or periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis? The answer is that both are systemic diseases and both are inflammatory and can destroy soft and hard tissues. Past studies have shown that people with rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to have periodontal disease, and in fact one particular study found people with rheumatoid arthritis were up to eight times more likely to have periodontal disease. Interestingly it’s also been found that treating periodontal disease can help to improve rheumatoid arthritis. People with periodontal disease are far more likely to lose teeth, and as such may be more likely to need dental implants in Kent.

If you do have rheumatoid arthritis then it’s well worth paying extra attention over your oral hygiene. Dr Rik Trivedi or any of our dentists in Kent can help you improve your oral hygiene routine, and of course it’s essential to visit our surgery twice a year. If you have any signs of gum disease then it’s important to act quickly as otherwise this condition could destroy your gum tissue and eventually the ligaments and bone surrounding your teeth. This is no real reason for anyone to develop gum disease, although it’s true that certain people are more at risk of developing this condition. It is usually caused by a lack of oral hygiene, and is something that will affect most people during their lifetime.

Even if you think you have a great oral hygiene routine it’s possible that it could benefit from having a bit of an overhaul. It’s all too easy to get into a routine that may mean you are missing certain areas of your teeth when brushing and flossing. These are all things we can help you with during your regular check-up.

Has it been a while since you’ve visited a dentist in Kent?  Why not give us a call today to book an appointment? We’re open six days a week including two late nights and Saturday mornings. Call us on 01474 537191 or if you prefer you can fill in our enquiry form at www.kentcosmeticdentists.co.uk   and request a call-back.
