Dental contouring and tooth reshaping

7th April, 2013

Tooth reshaping and dental contouring can help patients repair minor defects in their teeth. These are cosmetic procedures that create subtle changes in the teeth to improve their appearance. This can include fixing or repairing small imperfections such as tiny chips, pointy cuspid teeth, irregularly shaped teeth and teeth that slightly overlap one another.

Tooth reshaping and gum contouring are essentially the same thing. It is a cosmetic process that slightly alters or removes the outer protective covering of the teeth, known as the enamel, to alter the overall shape of the tooth. It can be used to reshape a tooth, make it longer or change its surface composition. This procedure is often used in conjunction with dental bonding, which uses a composite material that is very similar in the look and feel of teeth to reshape them.

The dentist will first take x-rays of the patient’s mouth before they begin the process of tooth reshaping, in order to make sure that the patient’s teeth are healthy enough for the procedure. Then the dentist will use a pen to mark the areas of the tooth that need to be reshaped. A specific sanding tool will then be used to remove tiny imperfections and reshape the teeth. The dentist may also use a strip with a sandpaper-like material on it to contour the edges of the teeth.

Tooth reshaping procedures are relatively cost effective, and in some cases they can be used instead of orthodontic braces or other aligning devices. In other cases the two treatments can be combined to create a straighter and more aligned smile. This procedure is generally painless and it can improve the overall health of the teeth by removing tiny gaps for food to hide in. However, this procedure can only be used on patients with minor dental problems, not on those who have serious problems. Also, the procedure may cause the teeth to become more sensitive.

Anyone who is interested in dental contouring and tooth reshaping procedures as well as braces in Gravesend should make an appointment with the dental staff at the Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre. How can I fix my crooked teeth?

16th March, 2013

If you’re looking to fix your crooked teeth, there are a number of solutions available. Modern orthodontics has come a long way and no longer do you have to wear traditional metal bracesto get straight teeth.

Some of these solutions include Invisalign, which is an orthodontic system using a series of virtually invisible aligners to gently guide your teeth into the desired position. These have to be worn for around two weeks at a time before moving onto the next set. Results can be seen in as little as 9-18 months.

A similar treatment is Clearstep which uses clear plastic trays to straighten your teeth. By exerting gentle pressure on the teeth, it can guides the teeth into position.

If you have a mild problem with your front teeth, the Inman Aligner is one solution to consider. This removable appliance is a clear plastic retainer which fits easily over the first four teeth. A constant gentle pressure is exerted, allowing the teeth to move into place quickly. The advantage of this is that you can see results in a short space of time, usually six months or less.

Other forms of fixed orthodontics include Social 6 braces, ideal for fixing mild cases of crowding or spacing on the first six front teeth. The brace is fixed discreetly onto the back of the teeth, so no one will be able to see it. Results can usually be seen in around 6 to 16 weeks, although in simple cases it can take between 6-8 weeks.

Alternatively, we offer appliances which are securely fixed onto the teeth using standard metal wires and brackets. We also use low-friction systems such as In-Ovation R and Damon to reduce treatment time.

If you’re based in Gravesend, Kent and you want to have your teeth straightened, Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre can help. Dr Rik Trivedi is an approved Clearstep and Invisalign provider so you can feel assured that when you come for orthodontic treatment, you’re in good hands.

Please call 01474 537 191 to book an appointment at our practice. If you would prefer to visit us, our opening hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 8pm, Friday from 9am to 3pm and Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

How can gum contouring and reshaping enhance my smile?

9th March, 2013

If your smile is looking a little ‘gummy’ and you’re unhappy with how your teeth look when you smile, one option you should consider is gum contouring and reshaping.

In gum contouring, the dentist can lengthen the appearance of your teeth by reshaping the gums. Your teeth can also be shortened, smoothed and levelled off to improve your smile line. Gum contouring is a procedure that’s normally done with a scalpel, but nowadays it tends to be done using a laser to remove any excessive gum which overlaps the teeth.

The procedure is quick and painless and the healing process is fairly quick too as the laser can be used to seal blood vessels to prevent any excess bleeding when the procedure is completed.

In some cases having a gum contouring procedure isn’t enough and when the gum is too far down the teeth you may need to have veneers or crowns to improve the appearance of your smile once the gum contouring is complete.

Not only will gum contouring improve your self-confidence it can also enhance the appearance of your smile. As the healing process is fairly quick, it means you won’t be spending a long time waiting for it to heal. You won’t feel anything while having the procedure as a local anaesthetic will be used, so it’s relatively painless.

Your dentist Kent may need to remove some bone from your teeth, but this procedure is very simple and won’t cause too much of a problem. Removing the gum can be problematic if there’s too much of it, so you may experience some swelling afterwards, but this can be corrected by undertaking further treatment.

If you want to know more about gum contouring and reshaping or other procedures which can enhance your smile such as teeth whitening, dentist Dr Rik Trivedi can help. Dr Trivedi is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and along with significant experience in cosmetic dentistry, he is committed to transforming your smile for the better.

Please call the Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre on 01474 537 191 to book an appointment. Our opening hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 8pm, Friday from 9am to 3pm and Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

What is gum contouring and reshaping?

3rd March, 2013

If you feel that you have a gummy smile, it can affect your confidence as well as the appearance of your teeth.  The result of too much gum tissue is that it can make your teeth appear smaller. A cosmetically appealing smile usually has between 1 or 2mm of gum tissue visible, but a gummy smile would have more than 2mm of gum tissue on display when a person smiles.

A gummy smile can be caused by having a short upper lip known as a high lip line, teeth which have suffered or been altered by passive eruption, small sized teeth  which are relative to the height of the visible gum or vertical overgrowth of the upper jaw bone.

Gum contouring involves reshaping the gum tissues using a laser device to trim away any excess gum which might be overlying the teeth. This quick and fairly painless treatment would traditionally be carried out using a scalpel.

The laser is often used because it’s quicker and limits any blood released because of the incision, while also allowing the gum tissue to heal more quickly and speed up recovery time. Occasionally bone may need to be reduced at the front of the tooth root to prevent the gum tissue from re-growing. By using crowns and veneers alongside this treatment you can get rid of your gummy smile for good.

At the Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre, our Principal Dentist Dr Rik Trivedi has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry including gum contouring. He can assess your smile and inform you if gum reshaping is a viable solution for you.

As a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and as a graduate from the Royal College of Surgeons, you can feel assured that his expertise means you’ll be treated with the best patient care and attention. Dr Trivedi can also recommend different options such as orthodontics or orthognathic jaw surgery if you have a severe case of a gummy smile.

Which aspects of cosmetic dentistry can improve my smile?

26th February, 2013

If you’re feeling unhappy with the appearance of your smile, it can affect your self-confidence and your ability to smile in public. If you recognise any of these feelings, it’s good to know that there is something you can do about it. Cosmetic dentistry focuses on enhancing your teeth so that you can show off your naturally beautiful smile.

Do you have stained teeth? Teeth whitening can restore their natural whiteness and make you feel proud to show off your smile. Using bleaching trays containing a mixture of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, your dentist in Kent will place this combination into dental trays which you then wear on your teeth.

After completing the first cycle in the dental practice, you will be given a home kit. You will then be able to whiten your teeth and have complete control over the level of whiteness that you’re looking for. It can take around 2-4 days to see a difference and two weeks to get a bright white smile.

If your teeth are chipped or broken, porcelain veneers are a good option. Veneers are thin porcelain slices which are applied to the surface of a tooth, a bit like a false fingernail fits a nail. They are bonded onto your teeth and the advantage is that it can make your teeth look both healthy and natural.

Do you have silver fillings which are ruining the appearance of your smile? It’s now possible to have metallic amalgam fillings removed and replaced with white composite instead. This mimics the appearance of your natural teeth, while restoring your tooth and keeping it fully functional.

If you’re looking for a professional cosmetic dentist, Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre can help. Dr Rik Trivedi is the Principal Dentist at the practice and has a high level of expertise in this area. As a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, you can feel assured that you’ll receive the utmost patient care throughout every stage of your treatment.

To find out more, please call us on 01474 537 191 and make an appointment. Our opening hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 8pm, Friday from 9am to 3pm and Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

Get a new smile with veneers

22nd February, 2013

If you want to enhance your smile and transform the way your teeth look, dental veneers are a good choice as they can fix a range of problems including any staining or discolouration as well as chipped or partially broken teeth. Along with dental implants, veneers can form a major part of a smile makeover.

Veneers are thin slices of porcelain which are ‘glued’ onto your teeth using a special strong bond, so the tooth requires very little preparation. They can be attached to the teeth to improve their colour, shape and position. A precise shade of porcelain can be used to give your tooth the right colour or to close small gaps which dental braces might not be suitable for. Veneers can also be used to create a symmetrical smile, by bringing a tooth in line if it’s out of position.

Veneers usually take at least two visits, one to prepare the tooth and match it to the shade required and the second is to fit it. Your dentist can show you how the veneer will look on your tooth and ensure you’re happy with it before bonding it into place. Once bonded, the veneer will be held firmly in place by a special adhesive.

To prepare a tooth for veneers, some of the enamel’s shiny outer surface is removed. Only a tiny amount is removed and it’s the same size and thickness of the porcelain veneer which is to be fitted, so the tooth remains the same size. After it’s been prepared, the dentist then takes an impression, using a mould which is sent to the technician along with any other information needed to make the veneer.

If you’re looking to have veneers fitted, Dr Rik Trivedi is an experienced cosmetic dentist in Kent who can assess your suitability for veneers. As a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, you can feel assured that you will be treated with the utmost care.

Same day smile with Cerec Technology at Parrock Street Dental

17th September, 2012

Single Appointment Dental Care

Why go to the dentist a second time when you don’t have to? With CEREC, the procedure is done in a single appointment, start to finish.

The tooth is numbed, cleaned and shaped, keeping as much of your healthy tooth as possible. A special powder is sprayed on the teeth and a picture taken. A 3-D image of the teeth then appears on the computer. The dentist then custom designs your new CEREC exactly for the best results. Once complete a button is pressed.

The computer is linked wirelessly to a milling machine, which will then make your CEREC exactly to the design in approximately 20 minutes.

The CEREC is then conditioned and bonded permanently to your tooth.

All this while you are comfortably entertained by our in chair DVD system!
