Get a Beautifully Natural Smile with Veneers and Braces in Kent

21st May, 2013

Have you thought about having a smile makeover? If so then dental veneers may well form part of your treatment plan. But what are they and how could they improve your smile?

Dental veneers are a versatile cosmetic dental treatment, and can be used to mask discoloured teeth, to mend small discrepancies or chips, to close or minimise gaps in between teeth, and to change the shade of teeth. They are a relatively conservative treatment as only a small amount of tooth structure needs to be removed to create sufficient room for these restorations. They are also a good choice for correcting teeth that are slightly crooked, and can be used after orthodontic braces in Kent.

The Procedure for Having Dental Veneers

The procedure for having dental veneers is very straightforward, and the first step is to book a consultation with one of our dentists in Kent at Parrock Street Dental & Implant Centre to discuss exactly how you’d like to improve your smile, and how many veneers are required.  Although some of our patients will opt to have a substantial number of veneers fitted to both their upper and lower teeth, this may not always be necessary. If you have had orthodontic treatment then you may just need one or two veneers to perfect your smile. Veneering is also frequently used in conjunction with teeth whitening. If this is the case then we’ll need to whiten your teeth before veneering. The reason for this is that it is much easier to accurately match your veneers to your newly whitened teeth, than to try to whiten your teeth to match your veneers.

The next step will be to prepare your teeth for veneering. We’ll normally need to remove approximately 0.5mm of tooth structure which is only a very small amount. This is necessary as otherwise the finished veneers would be too bulky and wouldn’t give good aesthetic results. Once your teeth are prepared then we’ll take an impression to send to our dental laboratory. This is cast up in dental plaster to provide an accurate replica of your teeth, and is used to construct your dental veneers. Once they are ready you can return to our dental surgery for fitting. We may need to make some minor adjustments before they are permanently cemented into place, but the finished result should be a very natural, but improved smile. With proper care your veneers should last a good decade or maybe even longer before they need replacing.

You can find out more about veneers during your free consultation, as our dental team can answer all your questions. Just give us a call on 01474 537191.

Improve your smile with cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics

29th April, 2013

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of the patient’s teeth and smile. In most situations, cosmetic dentistry procedures are considered to be elective treatments, but very severe cases of mouth problems may actually require these treatments.

There are several different types of cosmetic dentistry treatments available to patients today. These include inlay and overlay fillings, which are also called indirect fillings. This type of treatment uses composite or porcelain materials to fill in the holes of teeth, which are usually caused by tooth decay. These inlays and overlays are created in a laboratory setting to specifically fit into the patient’s tooth structure. Then they are bonded in place by the dentist using an adhesive. Composite bonding is another type of cosmetic dental treatment. This uses a composite material that is designed to mimic natural enamel and dentin to fill in any holes, chips or broken teeth. This material is put into place over the damaged tooth, it is formed into the correct shape and then a high intensity light is used to harden it into place.

Whitening procedures for teeth are also considered to be cosmetic treatments and they can vastly improve the overall appearance of the teeth by helping to remove stains and discolourations. Teeth that cannot be whitened using the typical whitening procedures may be improved through the use of veneers. Dental veneers are laminates made from porcelain or composite materials that are bonded to the tooth to cover up any problems. This can include broken, chipped or extremely discoloured teeth. Teeth that are missing completely or that are spaced too far apart will benefit from dental implants, which are artificial teeth that are implanted directly into the patient’s bones.

Some patients who undergo any of these cosmetic dentistry procedures chose to enhance their new smiles with facial aesthetic treatment such as dermal fillers or botulinum toxin injections. These are injected into the skin and give it a more youthful appearance, they can also make lips look more plumped up.

With today’s advancements in cosmetic dental procedures, there is no reason why people can’t have the smile they want. Anyone who is interested in any of these cosmetic dental treatments or dermal fillers and Botox in Kent should contact the dental team at the Parrock Street Dental and Implant Centre and lead dentist Dr Rik Trivedi.

Indulging your sweet tooth without damaging your teeth

1st October, 2012

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the chances are you are struggling between wanting to indulge it and not wanting to ruin your teeth.

But if the UK’s leading dental charity has anything to do with it, you won’t have to struggle for much longer – you’ll be able to reach for sweetly satisfying, sugar-free treats. There are already a few sugar-free sweets on the UK market, as well as many sugar-free chewing gums. Although we are traditionally the largest sugar confectionery consumers in Europe, with most of the leading manufacturers based here, the amount of sugar-free sweets is tiny – just 6% compared with 60% in Spain. The British Dental Health Foundation hopes to improve these figures, and is in talks with all the UK’s leading confectionery manufacturers and other sugar-free companies with a view to bringing more tooth friendly products to our shops.

But even if your favourite treat is loaded with sugar, you can still minimise the danger it poses to your teeth. This is because it is the frequency of sugar intake that is vital, not the amount. So several jellies, toffees, mints or even fruits eaten between meals throughout the day are worse for your teeth than, say, a Mars bar eaten with lunch.

The reason for this is that the bacteria in your mouth react with the sugar, causing acids which then lead to decay. Your saliva will wash away and neutralise harmful sugars and acids but it takes around 40 minutes to do this. If you are constantly nibbling or drinking sugary foods the saliva is unable to keep up, resulting in tooth decay. If your weakness is for frequent drinks throughout the day, try to drink water wherever possible. Many drinks, including flavoured waters, fruit juices, squash and fizzy pop, are acidic and will cause dental erosion, where the surface of your teeth is softened and worn away.

So if you must eat or drink sweet stuff, either ensure it is sugar free (low sugar or no added sugar still contains sugar), or indulge less often – at, or immediately after, mealtimes is ideal. You can also chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking to help boost saliva production and prevent decay.
